Weekend on the Rock October 4-6, 2013: Oktoberfest, Carnival, Table Tennis

Here are Inside Bainbridge recommendations for the weekend of October 4-6, 2013:

1. Rye and Barley at Bainbridge Island Brewery Oktoberfest
When: Friday, 4-8 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge Island Brewery, 9415 Coppertop Loop
Why: Because the band members will be wearing trachten and playing polkas and waltzes, and the Brewery will be serving Oktoberfest lager, pumpkin ales, and Kommuter Kolsch ale. Plus, you can bring your kids and dogs and eat brats, sauerkraut, and potato salad (which I don’t think is German). Es ist zum Schreien.

2. Janet Cramer and Nancy Heckler Art Exhibit Reception
When: Friday, 5-7 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge Library, 1270 Madison Ave. N
Why: Art and refreshments. Check out this luminous work by Cramer:

David Berfield3. BPA Gallery First Fridays Art Walk – “Portraits”  
When: Friday, 5-7 p.m.
Where: BPA Gallery, 200 Madison Ave.
Why: David Berfield combines computer-generated images with hand cut stencils and powdered glass fused to steel. Meet the artist and enjoy refreshments.

4. First Fridays Art Walk  
When: Friday, 6-8 p.m.
Where: Downtown Winslow
Why: The usual reasons: art, food, friends. And no rain!

5. The Ordinary Extraordinary Junco  
When: Saturday, 10-11:30 a.m.
Where: Bainbridge Cinema at the Pavilion, 403 Madison Ave N
Why: You know the little monk bird, with its dark cowl and ability to hang off just about anything? Well, this film (90 minutes) makes the pervasive species a star. It was filmed in remote northwestern and western hemisphere locales.

2 and up: $10. 4-12: $5. Under 3: free.

6. Kitsap Solar Tour  
When: Saturday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
Where: 9673 North Town Loop
Why: Examine the Nissan Leaf up close. It is not solar powered, in case you are wondering. But the homes on the tour are. Get an orientation and attend a Solar 101 Spin Your Meter Backwards presentation starting at 10. Tour three homes from 11 to 3.

7. Family Carnival at The Island School  
When: Saturday, 12-4 p.m.
Where: The Island School, 8553 NE Day Rd.
Why: For the chicken drop alone it’s worth your time. But then there’s the cupcake walk, in which everyone is guaranteed a cupcake, the used book sale, lots of games, things to eat, music, prizes. This year for the first time there will be Improv folk tales.

8. Tracing Yesterday’s Paths to the Present: A Celebration of Family History Month  
When: Saturday, 12:15-4:30 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge Library, 1270 Madison Ave. N
Why: Bainbridge Island Genealogical Society (BIGS) mentors will be available for free 30-minute tutoring sessions to help you start or continue your efforts to explain how you turned out the way you did.

9. Introduction to Judaism Class
When: Saturday, 1-2:30 p.m.
Where: Congregation Kol Shalom, 9010 Miller Road.
Why: This Judaism class will run through March, Saturday afternoons. להיוודע. You’ll have to go to class to find out what that Hebrew phrase means, and I pray to God I got it right.

10. Table Tennis Tournament
When: Saturday, 1:30-5 p.m.
Where: Huney Hall at Waterfront Park Community Center, 370 Brien Drive
Why: It’s table tennis time again. Table tennis, which used to be known as ping pong. This singles tournament is open to the first 30 players to sign up, which happens at the Senior Center, online via Parks and Recreation, or at the door. There are men’s, women’s, and mixed singles categories. Prizes go to the to top 3 finishers.

$10. $15 at the door.

11. First Saturdays with The EDGE Improv
When: Saturday, 7:30 p.m.
Where: BPA, 200 Madison Ave.
Why: For the laughs.

12. First Sundays Concert: Peter Mack  
When: Sunday, 4-6 p.m.
Where: Waterfront Park Community Center, 370 Brien Drive.
Why: Cornish College prof Mack plays Scarlatti, Debussy, Rachmaninoff, and Guastavino.

$20.00. $15 seniors, $10 students.

13. First-Sunday Juggling
When: Sunday, 7-8:30 p.m.
Where: BPA, 200 Madison Avenue
Why: The juggling here does not refer to what you’re doing all the time in your daily life. This is the bowling pin kind. It’s for anyone at any level, but I recommend you stand a little ways away from the beginners.
